Adjustable Bathroom Towel Bars
Published on September 3rd, 2020.
It’s in the details that great rooms are made in the home. When most people hear a phrase like this they think about a large room like the dining or living room. But this also accounts for the smaller rooms of the home such as the bathroom. In this article we’re going to look at the simple things that can make a difference when it comes to bathroom towel bars.
You probably don’t put a lot of thought into the bars that you put up in your bathroom. It’s okay, you’re not alone. Most people just grab something off the shelf and put it up to do the job. Sadly, this may be why something looks a little off in their bathroom, yet they can never quite pinpoint the problem. It’s a simple matter of space. If you have a small amount of space in which to put bathroom towel bars and cram a bar that’s a little big for that space into it, it looks a little awkward. Likewise if you have a large wall and put an average or smaller bar there, its going to look like it’s a little bit too small. For some people, they feel like their stuck. When they walk up to purchase bars directly off the rack they only come in three or four sizes. So what if the size of your bathroom doesn’t correlate to the size of the bars that are on the shelf. This is where adjustable bathroom towel bars come in.
Adjustable bathroom towel bars are exactly what the name implies; they are bars that you can adjust the length of. Some of these come with an extra long bar that can be cut down to size. Others have a bar with a spring inside that will flex to whatever size you allow them to go to but can also compress to be smaller. By using one of these types of adjustable bars, you can create the perfect sized ar for the spacing you have allotted in your bathroom.
You need to start by getting to know the space where you want to put the bathroom towel bars. Figure out what size bathroom towel bar would look best here and measure the spacing. Remember, you also have to take into account the mounting mechanisms which can add an extra inch or two on each side of the bar itself. Once you’ve decided on the right length for your bathroom towel bar, it’s time to put the mountings in place and adjust the bathroom towel bar length. If you’re using a spring bar this isn’t a problem as you can compress it to the right size. However, if you’re using a bathroom towel bar that has to be cut down to size, you want to be very careful here. Remember, some part of the bathroom towel bar actually has to go inside the mounting mechanism so you don’t want to cut it too short. Frankly, it’s best to cut it a little longer at first and slowly pare it down until it’s a perfect fit.

Beyond that, some will let you customize the length of the rack to exactly what you need. So how do you know what you need?
What Is It For?
The first question you have to ask yourself is what kind of work you need these bathroom towel bars to be doing. Essentially, how many towels do they need the hold? And how wide are those towels?
When it comes to putting bars by the sink, for a hand towel, generally you only need something that will hold one or two hand towels. Usually these hand towels will be folded so they don’t take up a huge amount of space. If you’re just using one hand towel, a 7-inch rack will be plenty of space. If you like the look of two hand towels, and maybe even one of those decorative washcloths on top of those, you probably should shoot for 12-inch bathroom towel bars.
On the other hand, near the tub, usually you don’t want to do with anything less than something that will hold two adult towels. Quite often, there are also decorative towels to put on these bars. If you use smaller body towels you may be able to get away with an 18-inch towel rack. How Much Space Do You Have?
A major consideration when deciding what type of bathroom towel bar you want in your bathroom is just how much space you have to put a bathroom towel bar. If you have very little wall space or just have a very small bathroom, you may have to figure out how to make do with smaller bars. This can be done. For example, if you’re limited to a 7-inch towel rack by the sink and only a 12-18 inch towel rack by the shower or tub, the simple answer is that you can only hang one towel at a time.
Before you ever go shopping, you should carefully measure the amount of space you have in your bathroom to install bathroom towel bars. You also want to consider where you’re going to place them so that they’re convenient. For example, the bar by the tub or shower needs to be easy to reach from inside the tub or shower. Likewise, the bar by the sink needs to be in close proximity to the sink so you’re not walking around with wet hands.

How to Install a Bathroom Towel Rack
Published on February 10th, 2011.
Installing bathroom towel racks are quite a simple process. However, keep in mind that wet towels will hang from these racks, so they must be installed to support the weight. Since the weight of a wet towel (also including hand washers and bathers) can be some what weighted down, it’s always important to hang one side of the towel rack on a stud, not just the drywall. This is probably the single most important part of installing your towel rack. If it’s ignored, there’s a good chance the rack ends up falling out, leaving a hole in your wall! This guide will share all you need to know when you’re installing your own bathroom towel rack.
The first step is choosing a convenient spot on the wall to hang your rack. Make sure that nothing will get in the way, such as the bathroom door. Since you’ll be grabbing your towels when you’re exiting the shower, it’s best to have your towel rack by the shower or bathtub.
Always make sure that your rack is positioned in a spot that will not be exposed to dripping water. Dripping water will damage the rack and this is another way to leave a hole in the wall. You’ll need a stud finder in order to locate the closest stud to your desired location. Keep running the stud finder in that area until you find the stud. This will be where you’ll hang one side of the rack, on the stud.
Now that you’ve found a location, choose a height that’s suitable for the average size person (unless everyone’s extremely small or tall). If it’s in a child’s bathroom, you may want to consider placing the towel rack on the lower side, unless you have a stepstool for the child.
Now that you’ve found a comfortable height, make a note on the stud using a pencil. Proceed by placing one end of the towel rack on the mark, while holding the other end on a horizontal line touching the wall as well. Make sure you have a leveler to confirm it’s on a straight line by holding it over the towel rack. Continue by marking where each spot will be placed, specifically the holes for the screws.
Now it’s time to drill some holes. Take the drill and drill the screw holes, where you’ve marked on the wall. The holes on the side opposite of the stud should be bigger, so the anchors can fit. The anchors will provide the extra support that the weaker side needs. You can hold them up in order to measure an accurate size.
Once you have those holes in place, place the anchors on the weaker side. The anchor will have a wider side and this side should be facing out. At this point, you’ll be able to put the towel rack in its desired position and screw in both sides.
Always test it out before completing the process. Take a few towels and see if it holds. You should be complete at this point with the installation of your new towel rack!

The Benefits of an Enclosed Bathroom Towel Rack
Published on February 10th, 2011.
When it comes to traditional bathrooms, many of the accessories that are going to be used in this space are hung on the wall. But what if you have walls that are specially decorated to make this a beautiful room? You don’t want to go drilling holes in tile, mosaics, murals, etc. to add a few accessories. Instead you need to come up with some new accessories, that are freestanding, that will leave your walls intact.
In addition to looking for something that’s free standing, do you really want something that looks extremely functional sitting in front of all that beauty? You probably don’t want a boring bathroom towel rack taking away from the look of the mosaic or wall. Instead, you need to take a little extra time and look for a towel rack that suits the bathroom you’re putting it in. In many cases what you’re going to end up wanting is an enclosed towel rack.
An enclosed towel rack is just what it sounds like; it’s a towel rack that is inside a cabinet. When you open the doors the towels you need are front and center waiting to be used, but they aren’t always sitting there looking you in the face screaming of the function of this room. Instead, you can shut the doors when you don’t need the towels and just appreciate a nice decorative piece of furniture that accents all the other decorative touches you put in place in this room.
When choosing an enclosed bathroom towel rack for your home, the first thing you’re going to look for should be pretty obvious. You’re going to want something that matches the bathroom in material, style and color. Thankfully, there are a wide variety of items out there that should be able to fit the bill.
One other thing you’re going to need to think of his how many towels you need to house in the enclosed bathroom towel rack. You see, there are some styles of racks that can only hold one towel on the rack at a time. Quite often these have shelves that can hold other towels that may be needed as well. These take up a lot less space in the bathroom, which is a plus if you’re working under space limitations. On the other hand, if you need a lot of towels to be accessible you may want to look for one of the wider bathroom towel rack units. These essentially look like your average cabinet or shelving unit, but are 24-30 inches wide. Inside a double or triple towel rack will be holding hanging towels and a shelf that can hold plenty of extras to make sure everybody has a towel when they need it.
When choosing an enclosed bathroom towel rack you need to take a little time to note the space you have and the space you want to take up in your bathroom and then measure the accessory options you want to have in place that this piece of furniture can serve.
